2.4 Lab Kits
A lab kit, also referred to as a test kit, is a pre-assembled package containing all necessary components for collecting, processing, and transporting biological samples or conducting specific procedures during a clinical trial.
In this section, you can enter information about the lab kits, including the kit name, supply details and quantity required for the trial.
Lab Kit Type
There is a range of Lab Kits that you are able to choose. Lab kits A-E are made from specific material compositions.
The lab kit options are:
- Default
- Testing kit A
- Testing kit B
- Testing kit D
- Testing kit E
- Testing kit (Liver AE)
- Testing kit (Blood test kit)
- Testing kit (Urine test kit)
- Testing kit (Visit-Low Impact)
- Testing kit (Visit-High Impact)
- Testing kit (Screening Kit)
- Urine pregnancy test (ALERE hCG test)
- Urine pregnancy test for patient at home use (ClearBlue rapid detection)
The table below references what is in Testing Kits A-E
Note: Kits A-D look very similar, but there is a slight difference in the weights/size/shape of some of the individual components, hence they have a different impact

Note: Lab Kit C has been removed in version 3 of the calculator due to it being the same weight and carbon emissions as Lab Kit B. Any historic assesments that used Lab Kit C have now been moved to use Lab Kit B.
Lab Kit name
Enter a name here that will easily help you to distinguish between your kits or different scenarios.
To rename the kit, just click in the text box, delete the existing name, and type your own.
Is the Lab Kit supplied locally or centrally
From the distribution site you need to select if the product is supplied Locally or Centrally.
Locally
Locally refers to the kit being made on site, or very close by.
Centrally
Centrally refers to the kit being supplied from a different country. Select the country from the alphabetised list, or start typing the name of the country to see matching options.
You can add more than one country here if required. To delete a country, click on the cross to the right of the country name.
Kit Weight (kg)
Here, you need to enter the weight of a single lab kit.
If you are unsure of this data, you can use an approximate value; this will affect the confidence score on the results page.
Kit quantity unit
If you have selected that the product is supplied centrally, you will be asked to add information about the lab kit, this needs to include the box or outer packaging, any information leaflets and anything else provided alongside the product.
You need to select whether the Kit quantity unit is Per Trial, Per Participant or Total Spend.
Note: If you select 'per participant,' you must manually enter the percentage of oversupply for the product.
Oversupply, also referred to as overage, is the term for a deliberate buffer of a product to cover variability in the demand for that product during a trial, which usually results in unused product.
If you select 'Total Spend,' this is a monetary value representing the spend across the whole trial from start to finish in the chosen currency. You need to round up to the closest whole number.
Note: We recommend only using 'Total Spend' data if you don't have 'Per Trial' or 'Per Participant' data available to enter.
Using 'Total Spend' to calculate emissions does not give as accurate a result as defining the quantity using 'Per Trial' or 'Per Participant'.
Kit quantity
This is the quantity of lab kits that are required for the duration of the trial.
Kit weight
Here you need to enter the weight of each lab kit in kilograms (kg) Make sure the weight includes any outer packaging, instructions, leaflets and marketing material that is provided to the trial participant alongside the product.
Info: When you have entered all of the information for each product, you need to click on the 'Add New Record' button. Once you add the product, you will see it in the table at the bottom of the page. From here, you can either edit, duplicate or delete this product.
Alternatively, scroll to the top of the page and restart the process to add another product.
