Version 2

Release Date: July 2025

IP: Additional IP types, manufacture override, placebo factor, record duplication

The interventional product section has been updated to allow for the selection of additional IP types, including devices and diagnostics. This allows for a more accurate calculation of the emissions associated with the use of interventional products in clinical trials, as different IP types have different emissions factors.

Additionally it's possible to override the manufacturing emissions for an interventional product if you have your own data available.

The placebo factor has been added to the interventional product section, which allows you to account for the emissions associated with the production and use of placebos in clinical trials. Finally, it's now possible to duplicate an existing interventional product entry, which can save time when entering data for multiple similar products.

Lab kits: Additional kit type selection

Thee lab kit section has been updated to allow for the selection of additional kit types. This allows for a more accurate calculation of the emissions associated with the use of lab kits in clinical trials, as different kit types have different emissions factors.

Participant travel: Country level breakdown

The participant travel section has been updated to optionally allow for a country level breakdown of the participant travel data. This allows for a more accurate calculation of the emissions associated with participant travel, as different countries have different travel modes and distances.

Trial site staff: Update to calculation methodology for staff time

The trial site staff section has been updated to change the calculation methodology for staff time.

Travel mode update

There is now a new travel mode option for electric cars. This has been added to any section which allows you to define travel modes, including participant travel, trial staff commuting and trial management travel.

Local consumables: Additional consumables added to list

Additional consumables have been added to the list of local consumables that can be included in the calculator. This allows for a more comprehensive calculation of the emissions associated with the use of local consumables in clinical trials.

Samples: Shipping and storage details

When defining the sample processing and storage it's now possible to define the type of shipper used for the transportation of the samples and the storage temperature of the samples. This allows for a more accurate calculation of the emissions associated with the transportation and storage of the samples, as different shipper types and storage temperatures have different emissions factors.

Updated emissions

The data sources for the calculator have been updated to include the latest available data. This includes updates to the electricity grid factors for each country, which are used to calculate the emissions from electricity consumption. The fuel emissions factors have also been updated, including for natural gas, which is a common fuel used in many activities. Additionally, the transport modes and freighting data have been updated to reflect the latest available information on emissions from transportation.
