2.11 Local consumables

The total impact of local consumables is the sum of the manufacture and end of life impact of all local consumables used.

Manufacture

For manufacture, per consumable (e.g. syringe, needle, gloves, face mask):

(Number of participants x number of visits x ((number of [consumable] per visit
x [consumable] manufacture EF) + (number of [consumable] per visit
x [consumable] manufacture EF)) etc.

End of life

For end of life (per consumable, e.g. syringe, needle, gloves, face mask), it is assumed consumables are sent to incineration:

(Number of participants x number of visits x ((number of [consumable] per visit
x [consumable] weight x incineration EF) + (number of [consumable] per visit
x [consumable] weight x incineration EF)) etc.

Example in which 2 syringes, 2 needles, 1 gloves and 1 mask are used per visit, with 50 participants and 10 visits throughout the trial.

(50 x 10 x ((2 x 0.082 kg CO2 eq) + (2 x 0.003 kg CO2 eq) + (1 x 0.102 kg CO2 eq)
+ (1 x 0.015 kg CO2 eq)) + (50 x 10 x ((2 x 0.0166 x 1.57 kg CO2 eq) + (2 x 0.001 x 1.57 kg CO2 eq)
+ (1 x 0.0392 x 1.57 kg CO2 eq) + (1 x 0.00436 x 1.57 kg CO2 eq))
= 205 kg CO2 eq
